                         ID #   171

Authors   Rich, Terry and Barb Wales

       Publication Date   November 15, 1999

Produced By   Idaho Bureau of Land Management

Summary   It is our belief, and that of Idaho Partners In Flight, that the sage grouse serves as an umbrella species for

a number of other species that use sagebrush habitats as their primary habitat type.  The implication is that

if we mange habitat properly to conserve populations of sage grouse, we also will conserve populations of

these other species.  Sage grouse require healthy rangelands with substantial cover of native shrubs,

grasses and forbs.  Further, they require large blocks of this type of habitat, as much as 2500 square miles

per population.  Thus, if we can provide this type of habitat in these types of blocks over a significant portion

of the range of the sage grouse, not only the grouse, but other species should do fine.  Of course, we need

research to examine this hypothesis, but it seems like a reasonable was to proceed in the mean time.

Report contains some data that pertain to the possible role of sage grouse as an umbrella species for other

                                  sagebrush steppe vertebrates.
