Summary In 1993, the Washington
Department of Fish and Wildlife initiated a shrike survey with the following
objectives: to begin development of survey techniques;
to obtain a baseline number of shrike breeding
pairs/km in shrub steppe
habitat; and to locate breeding territories for possible future research or
population trends. In 1994 several new objectives were
added: to establish an additional 19
routes for a
total of 25; t utilize
volunteers to conduct surveys; to obtain a baseline number of breeding
territories/km for
the newly established
routes; to determine trends between years for the routes established in 1993;
and to
continue expanding
Wildlife Resource Data Systems database for loggerhead shrikes.
