Ferruginous Hawk

Publication Name   State of Washington, Migration and Winter Ranges of Ferruginous Hawks from Washington, Annual

                                 Report

                         ID #   256

Authors   Watson, J.W. and D.J. Pierce

       Publication Date   January 2000

Produced By   Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife

Summary   In the spring of 1999, a study was initiated to investigate the migration and winter ranges of ferruginous

hawks (Buteo regalis) that breed in Washington state.  Satellite telemetry is a technology that allows

long-range monitoring of raptors throughout the world.  Hawks instrumented with Platform Transmitter

Terminals (PTTs) can be monitored regularly via satellites which retransmit the hawk's locations back to

ground stations, where they can be downloaded by computer.  This report represents the preliminary results

of the investigation, with specific objectives to:  1) describe ferruginous hawk migration corridors and

timing; 2) identify their winter ranges and key prey; and 3) identify their sources of winter mortality.

Produced By   Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife - Olympia

Summary   This document summarizes the historic and current distribution and abundance of ferruginous hawks in

Washington and describes factors affecting the species' population and its habitat.  It prescribes strategies

to recover the species, such as protecting the population, evaluating and managing habitat, and initiating

research and education programs.  Target population objectives and other criteria for reclassification are

identified and an implementation schedule is presented.

Publication Name   Assessment of Smolt Condition for Travel Time Analysis - Annual Report 1990

                         ID #   604

Authors   John W. Beeman, Dennis W. Rondorf, Joyce C. Faler, Philip V. Haner, Sally T. Sauter, David A. Venditti

       Publication Date   December 1991

Produced By   U.S. Department of Energy, Bonneville Power Adminstration, Division of Fish and Wildlife; U.S.

Summary   The Water Budget is a volume of water used to enhance flows in the Columbia and Snake rivers during the

downstream migration of salmonids. To manage the Water Budget, the Fish Passage Center estimates

travel times of juvenile salmonids through index reaches of the main-stem rivers using information on river

flow and the migrational characteristics of the fish. This study was initiated to 1) provide physiological

information about the juvenile salmonids used for these travel time estimates, 2) to analyze the physiological

data, and 3) to determine if an "index" of smolt condition could be developed to aid in management of the

                                 Water Budget.

Publication Name   Determination of the Depth Distribution of Juvenile Salmonids in the Turbine Intakes at Rocky Reach and

                                 Rock Island Dams

                         ID #   30

                   Authors   Hays, Steven

       Publication Date   March 15, 1984

Produced By   Chelan County PUD, Fish and Wildlife Operations - Wenatchee, WA

Summary   The results of the fyke net studies at Rocky Reach and Rock Island Dams are presented in this report.  The

vertical distribution pattern of each salmonid species encountered in the turbine intakes is displayed for

different locations and diurnal cycles.  The fish distributions are then used to estimate the potential fish

collection effectiveness of submersible screens at Rocky Reach Dam.  Since these studies were

conducted, the results of hydraulic model studies have shown that submersible screens are not suitable for

use in the Rock Island Dam second powerhouse.
