Publication Name Interpreting Indicators of Rangeland Health, Version 3

                   ID #                 607

Authors      Mike Pellant, Patrick Shaver, David A. Pyke, Jeffrey E. Herrick

Publication Date        Nov. 2000

Produced By    USDA, NRCS, U.S. Dept. of the Interior, BLM, USGS, Agricultural Research Center

Summary    This technical reference describes a new qualitative assessment protocol to be used for interpreting

indicators of rangeland health. Use of the reference will allow for more consistent interpretations of

rangeland health indicators, thus making assessment results more comparable. The procedure has been

developed for use by experienced, knowledgeable land managers as it requires a good understanding of

ecological processes, vegetation, and soils for each of the sites to which it is applied. If used by

knowledgeable and experienced people, they will be able to make rapid and preliminary evaluations of soil

and site stability, hydrologic function, and biotic integrity on rangelands. Land managers should not use this

                         technique for monitoring.

Publication Name         Non-Federal Grazing Lands in the United States

                   ID #                 627

           Authors

Publication Date    October 1996

Produced By U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service

Summary      Non-Federal grazing lands (range, pasture, hay, and grazed forest) make up approximately one-third of the

Nation's land - 642 million acres! If managed wisely, these lands, the plants that grow on them, and the

domestic and wild animals that graze on them contribute to the environmental, economic, and social

well-being of our Nation. Well-managed, healthy grazing lands are important for food and fiber, water

quantity and quality, wildlife habitat, recreational opportunities, sustainable agriculture and rural life, and

                        mitigation of global climate change.

Publication Name      Range Field Day Progress Report 2000, Sustainable Livestock Production in Forested and Intermountain

                        Rangelands - Special Report 1018

                   ID #                 608

           Authors

Publication Date        June 2000

      Produced By     Oregon State University

Summary        Agricultural production and the use of natural resources have had many vocal critics in recent years. The

livestock industry has been challenged, particularly in the Western U.S., in regards to its sustainability.

Across the West, livestock production was put in balance with the perceived notion of sustainability: the

long-term output of livestock products. The future use of public lands for livestock grazing may hinge on our

ability to convince the public that grazing is a sustainable practice. Therefore, in this paper we hope to

make the giant leap from this philosophical discussion to some ideas that may help livestock producers

move further in the direction of sustainability.

Publication Name    Working Trees for Livestock

                   ID #                 629

           Authors

Publication Date

Produced By    USDA, NRCS, National Agroforestry Center

Summary     Conventional wisdom in the past has been that livestock and trees can't co-exist. Yet modern agricultural

practice is showing that livestock and trees not only can co-exist, but, if properly managed, can provide

additional income from land formerly used for a single crop. This publication will acquaint you with some of

the specific ways you and your land can benefit by putting trees to work for your livestock.

           Authors

Publication Date December 1996

Produced By     U.S. EPA, WA DOE, USDA, NRCS, WSU, Uof Idaho, Air Quality Authorities, Conservation Districts,

Summary    The Columbia Plateau Wind Erosion Air Quality Project is conducting some of the leading scientific

research in the nation on air pollution caused by wind erosion on agricultural fields. This relatively new

project, now into it's fourth year, has made unprecedented advances toward understanding the

characteristics, sources, and fate of particulate matter in windblown dust which may cause adverse health

effects, visibility impairment, materials damage, and various discomforts to everyday life.

Publication Name Northwest Columbia Plateau Wind Erosion/Air Quality Project, 1998 Annual Report

                   ID #                 606

Authors Dr. Keith Saxton, and Dr. Dwane Miller

Publication Date               1998

Produced By     U.S. EPA, WA DOE, USDA Cooperative States Research Education and Extension Service, USDA

Summary         This report reflects research projects that have a wide range of science ranging from using satellite data

to define the regional characteristics, engineering prediction equations, development of new farming

systems, and providing educational material to regional urban and rural populations. Several enhancement

projects such as biological fingerprinting, historic dust accumulations over geologic times and assessing

social benefits of clean air alternatives are providing interesting results very unique to this project. This

report is an annual summary for those projects which were active during the current year.

Publication Name Northwest Columbia Plateau Wind Erosion/Air Quality Project, 2001 Annual Report

                   ID #                 594

Authors        Dr. William Schillinger and Dr. Keith Saxton

Publication Date               2001

Produced By       Washington State University and USDA

Summary  Research in the irrigated Columbia Basin is focused on cover crop management and assessment

strategies following high soil disturbance crops such as potatoes and sugar beets. A long-term irrigated

cropping systems study is helping growers find feasible alternatives to burning cereal stubble. Economic

analysis, measurement of soil quality changes, on-farm testing, and extension outreach are integral

components of our wind erosion control effort.
